Stainless Imports Up 30 Percent Through Three Quarters

Stainless steel imports into the United States through the first nine months of the year were up 30.9 percent compared to 2010, according to the latest data from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America, Washington, D.C. Imports of stainless steel, including electrical and alloy tool steel, totaled 606,917 tons through the first three quarters of 2011.

U.S. consumption for the period totaled 1.8 million tons, up 31.8 percent from 2010. The nine-month import penetration was 34.1 percent, up 0.3 percentage points from last year.

The following data represents imports and U.S. consumption for the first nine months of 2011, compared to the same period in 2010, by specialty steel product line:

• Stainless steel sheet/strip: Imports were 313,342 tons, a 12.9 percent increase; U.S. consumption was 1,211,765 tons, a 31.7 percent increase.

• Stainless steel plate: Imports were 129,740 tons, a 118.0 percent increase; U.S. consumption was 270,663 tons, a 50.2 percent increase.

• Stainless steel bar: Imports were 107,671 tons, a 41.1 percent increase; U.S. consumption was 198,494 tons, a 25.5 percent increase.

• Stainless steel rod: Imports were 20,984 tons, a 17.8 percent increase; U.S. consumption was 55,964 tons, a 14.0 percent increase.

• Stainless steel wire: Imports were 35,180 tons, an 8.2 percent increase; U.S. consumption was 42,397 tons, a 0.2 percent decrease.

• Alloy tool steel: Imports were 81,712 tons, a 38.4 percent increase; U.S. consumption was not calculable.

• Electrical steel: Imports were 84,508 tons, a 20.1 percent increase; U.S. consumption was 168,937 tons, a 17.1 percent increase.
