Service Center Shipments of Steel, Aluminum Up in First Quarter
 
Despite inclement weather across the United States and Canada, U.S. shipments of steel and aluminum and Canadian shipments of aluminum increased compared to the same month last year, according to the Metals Activity Report from the Metals Service Center Institute, Rolling Meadows, Ill. Only Canadian shipments of steel suffered a decline compared to 2013.

U.S. service centers shipped 3.6 million tons of steel products in January, up 0.1 percent from the same month in 2013. Service center steel product inventories totaled 8.6 million tons at the end of the month, down 2.1 percent from January 2013, but an increase of 0.2 percent from December. At January shipping rates, that represented 2.3 months of supply, down from the 2.8 months the previous year.

U.S. service centers shipped 134,300 tons of aluminum products in January, an increase of 6.5 percent from the same month in 2013. U.S. service center inventories of aluminum products totaled 382,300 tons at the end of the month, up 4.3 percent from January 2013, but down 0.1 percent from December. At January shipping rates, that represented 2.8 months of supply, down from 3.6 the previous year.

Canadian service centers shipped 495,300 tons of steel products during the month, down 5.2 percent from January 2013. Canadian steel product inventories totaled 1.4 million tons at the end of the month, a decrease of 20.5 percent from January 2013, but an increase of 0.3 percent from December. At January shipping rates, that represented 2.8 months of supply, down from 3.9 months last year.

Canadian service centers shipped 13,700 tons of aluminum products in January, an increase of 0.9 percent from the same month the previous year. Canadian inventories of aluminum products totaled 37,800 tons at the end of the month, a decrease of 7.0 percent from last year, but up 0.4 percent from December. At January shipping rates, that represented 2.8 months of supply, down from 4.1 months last year.
