2013 a Strong Year for Stainless Production
 
Global stainless steel melt shop production increased by 7.8 percent to 38.1 million metric tons in 2013, reports the Brussels-based International Stainless Steel Forum. With the exception of Western Europe and Africa, all regions achieved positive growth in stainless steel.

Asia, excluding China, produced 8.8 million tons during 2013, an increase of 0.8 percent over 2012. Production throughout the region ranged from an increase of 5.4 percent in India to a decline of 3.7 percent in Taiwan. Production levels in Japan and South Korea remained unchanged.

China continued to expand its production share, which is approaching 50 percent. Stainless steel production in China increased by 18 percent to 19 million tons.

In the Americas, stainless steel production increased by 3.6 percent to 2.5 million tons.

In Western Europe and Africa, production decreased by 4.3 percent year-on-year to 7.5 million tons. In Central and Eastern Europe, stainless production grew by 13.6 percent to 400,000 tons.
