U.S. Steel, Aluminum Shipments Climb in April
 
The U.S. continued to rebound from the bumpy start to 2014 with shipments of both steel and aluminum products increasing in April, according to the latest Metals Activity Report from the Metals Service Center Institute, Rolling Meadows, Ill. However, Canadian shipments of both products were off in April compared to the same month in 2013.

U.S. service centers shipped 3.8 million tons of steel products in April, up 4.9 percent from the same month in 2013. For the year to date, shipments increased 3.1 percent to 14.5 million tons.

Service center steel product inventories totaled 8.6 million tons at the end of the month, up 3.7 percent from April 2013 and 4.2 percent from March. At April shipping rates, that represented 2.3 months of supply, the same as the previous year.

U.S. service centers shipped 139,500 tons of aluminum products during the month, an increase of 9.4 percent from April 2013. Year-to-date shipments totaled 533,600 tons, 10.1 percent better than the previous year.

U.S. service center inventories of aluminum products totaled 371,700 tons at the end of the month, up 6.7 percent from the same month last year and up 3.3 percent from March. At April shipping rates, that represented 2.8 months of supply, down from 2.9 months the previous year.

Canadian service centers shipped 496,300 tons of steel products during the month, a 5.6 percent decrease from April 2013. For the year to date, Canadian shipments declined 2.2 percent to 1.9 million tons.

Canadian steel product inventories totaled 1.4 million tons at the end of the month, a decrease of 11.7 percent from the same month in 2013, and down of 2.7 percent from March. At April shipping rates, that represented 2.9 months of supply, down from 3.1 months last year.

Canadian service centers shipped 13,400 tons of aluminum products in April, a decrease of 5.3 percent from the same month last year. Year-to-date shipments of aluminum products totaled 52,700 tons, an increase of 0.5 percent over last year.

Canadian inventories of aluminum products totaled 39,500 tons at the end of the month, an increase of 6.6 percent from last year, and up 3.1 percent from March. At April shipping rates, that represented 3.0 months of supply, up from 2.6 months last year.
