Service Center Shipments Grow in June
 
Service center shipments of both steel and aluminum jumped considerably in June in both the United States and Canada, according to the latest Metals Activity Report from the Metals Service Center Institute, Rolling Meadows, Ill.

U.S. service centers shipped 3.7 million tons of steel products in June, a 10.2 percent increase from the same month in 2013. For the year to date, shipments increased 4.2 percent to 21.9 million tons.

Service center steel product inventories totaled 8.5 million tons at the end of the month, up 7.4 percent from June 2013 and up 1.4 percent from the previous month. At June shipping rates, that represented 2.3 months of supply, down from 2.4 months the previous year.

U.S. service centers shipped 138,400 tons of aluminum products during the month, an increase of 13.6 percent from the same month last year. Year-to-date shipments totaled 808,400 tons, 9.4 percent greater than the previous year.

U.S. service center inventories of aluminum products totaled 385,200 tons at the end of the month, up 5.0 percent from the same month in 2013, but down 1.0 percent from May. At June shipping rates, that represented 2.8 months of supply, down from 3.0 percent the previous year.

Canadian service centers shipped 481,000 tons of steel products in June, a 6.0 percent increase from the previous year. For the year to date, Canadian shipments declined 0.7 percent to 2.9 million tons.

Canadian steel product inventories totaled 1.4 million tons at the end of the month, a decrease of 6.3 percent from the same month in 2013, but down slightly from May. At June shipping rates, that represented 2.9 months of supply, down from 3.3 months last year.

Canadian service centers shipped 13,900 tons of aluminum products in June, an increase of 7.6 percent from the same month last year. Year-to-date shipments of aluminum products totaled 80,700 tons, an increase of 1.1 percent from last year.

Canadian inventories of aluminum products totaled 37,500 tons at the end of the month, an increase of 4.2 percent from last year, but down 3.1 percent from May. At June shipping rates, that represented 2.7 months of supply, down from 2.8 months last year.
