Warehouse shipments of copper and brass products were up 8.9 percent in February compared to the same month the previous year, according to the Copper and Brass Servicenter Association, Overland Park, Kansas. Distributors shipped 23.3 million pounds during the month, compared to 21.4 million pounds in February 2011.
The shipments were off 1.4 percent from January’s total of 24.0 million pounds.
Copper shipments increased 13.1 percent in February from a year ago to 10.8 million pounds. Alloy shipments saw a 5.6 percent gain to 12.5 million pounds. Compared to January, total copper shipments were down 0.7 percent, while alloy shipments dropped 3.9 percent.
For the year to date, total copper shipments were up 13.4 percent to 22.0 million pounds, and alloy shipments were up 3.5 percent to 25.5 million pounds. Total warehouse shipments were up 7.9 percent compared to the first two months of 2010.
Among product lines, copper rod saw the biggest year-over-year gains, up 23.4 percent to 5.7 million pounds. Also enjoying large percentage gains were alloy pipe, 200 Series brass plate and all other alloy plate.
The biggest decline was experienced in copper plate, which fell 18.1 percent to 635,000 pounds.
