Gerdau Resumes Construction of Mexican Structural Shapes Mill

Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau announced plans to resume construction of a $542 million steel mill in Sagun, Mexico. The electric arc furnace mill will focus on the production of structural shapes.

The new mill will have an annual capacity of 1 million tons of steel and 700,000 tons of rolled product. The construction will enable the company to replace imports of the products into Mexico.

The facility will be constructed as part of a joint venture with Gerdau Corsa. Plans for the mill were initially announced in 2008, but were idled with the economic downturn. The mill is expected to be operational by the second half of 2014.

Also, Gerdau is in the process of installing a hot-rolled coil mill at its Acominas facility in Brazil. The 770,000-ton mill is expected to be on line before the end of the year.
