MCN Offers Exciting New Column to Christen 2018

By Dan Markham

If your habit when you receive Metal Center News is to open the front cover and begin reading the magazine front to back, today is probably the last time you do that.

If you flip to the inside back page of this month’s issue, you will see the first installment of a new feature in MCN. View from the Corner Office has begun its monthly run, and I’m confident it will quickly become a must-read for the distribution industry.

Each month, the column will feature direct, unfiltered insights from one of North America’s leading service center executives. This month, Russel Metals’ CEO-to-be John Reid is offering his thoughts on the shift of risk from customers and manufacturers to their service center peers, and how to deal with this new push to ensure the best outcome for distributors. Next month, we’ll turn the column over to another leading executive for his or her thoughts on a different topic. The contributors will write about any issue facing metals distribution that suits them. There are no limitations. And it will be delivered in their words for their peers in the metal service center business to read and chew over.

Metal Center News has already lined up an impressive roster of service center executives who have graciously committed to offering their perspectives, carrying us through the end of 2018. I was stunned at the universal willingness to participate from all I asked, primarily through personal conversations when I saw them at various metals events at the back end of 2017. Their willingness to share their thoughts is a testament to the support the industry’s players have for the success of the entire metals supply chain.

Though the lineup is set for 2018, I welcome anyone else who is interested in contributing – regardless of company size, product range or reputation – to reach out to me if you would like to participate in the coming years. Whether you’re a toll processor of carbon sheet, a master distributor of specialty metals or a red metals service center, you probably have something to say. And the greater the diversity in voices we can offer, the more informative and relevant the feature will be to our thousands of service center readers across North America.

As much as I hope I’ve learned about metals distribution over the course of my dozen years with this publication, I have never run a metal service center company nor will I ever do so. John Reid and the men and women who follow him on our back page have, and they’ve done it well. I eagerly look forward to reading what each of them has to say in the coming months. I’m certain you will as well.
