Triple-S Takes Over O'Neal Locations

Houston-based Triple-S Steel Holdings Inc. is now doing business in the locations formerly occupied by O’Neal Steel Inc. in Commerce City, Colo., and Farmington, N.M. Triple-S also has secured a third long-term lease on O’Neal’s former facility in Grand Junction, Colo. The service centers will operate as part of the Intsel Steel West division of Triple-S.

The locations, outside its core geography, were among those O’Neal planned to close as part of a recently announced consolidation. O’Neal is based in Birmingham, Ala., and its closest warehouse to Colorado and New Mexico is in Dallas.

“This was not an acquisition of O’Neal’s business units, we simply bought their inventory and equipment and signed leases with their landlord,” says Gary Stein, Triple-S CEO. “It works a little better for our distribution network because we have big facilities in Denver and Salt Lake City already.” It also works out well for the 30-35 O’Neal employees who now have jobs with Triple-S.

Intsel began operations in Commerce City and Farmington on Oct. 14. The Grand Junction location is a work in progress. “O’Neal had closed that facility several years ago. It will take a little longer to ramp up there,” Stein says.

Prior to their acquisition by O’Neal in 2006, these facilities were operated by the McCallin family as Timberline Steel. Dan McCallin has joined the Triple-S team to aid in integration and growth initiatives. “We are pleased to have been able to work out a very quick transition with the O’Neal team and offer a near seamless experience to customers in this region. We believe these facilities will benefit from their proximity to our large distribution operations in Denver and Salt Lake City,” says Mike Rolnick, vice president of R&S Steel/Intsel Steel West in Denver.

Intsel focuses on structural steel products including wide-flange beams, plates and tubing.
