AISI: U.S. Steel Imports Down 4% for the Year
 
The U.S. imported 2.8 million net tons of steel in September, down 4.1 percent compared to August, according to Census Bureau data and the Washington-based American Iron and Steel Institute, the trade group representing domestic mills. Finished steel imports of 2.1 million tons were also down 4.1 percent compared to last year.

For the year to date, U.S. steel imports totaled 23.9 million tons, down 4 percent from the previous year. Finished steel imports declined 4.0 percent to 18.7 million tons for the first nine months of 2013.

Finished steel import market share was an estimated 23 percent in September and for the year to date.
Key finished steel products with a significant import increase in September compared to the previous month were cut length plates, up 60 percent; hot-rolled bars, up 47 percent; tin plate, up 35 percent; and plates in coils, up 16 percent.

In September, the largest volumes of finished steel imports from offshore were from South Korea at 317,000 net tons, down 15 percent; China at 194,000 tons, up 77 percent; Japan at 191,000 net tons, up 4 percent; Turkey at 115,000 tons, up 24 percent; and The Netherlands at 108,000 tons, up 38 percent.

For the first nine months, the leading offshore suppliers were South Korea at 2.7 million tons, down 2 percent; Japan at 1.5 million tons, down 3 percent; China at 1.4 million tons, up 16 percent; and Turkey at 1.0 million tons, down 10 percent.
