Red Metal Shipments Finish 2013 Down 1.7 Percent
Total warehouse shipments of red metals declined 1.7 percent in 2013, according to the Copper and Brass Servicenter Association, Overland Park, Kan. Shipments of copper and brass products by service centers totaled 258.1 million pounds in 2013.
Total copper shipments increased 1.1 percent to 124.2 million pounds in 2013, while alloy shipments declined by 4.1 percent to 133.9 million pounds. Sheet products showed the greatest gains in 2014, with copper sheet up 3.7 percent to 49.3 million pounds and other alloy sheet up 14.3 percent to 13.3 million pounds. All plate products were down compared to 2012.
The industry saw much better shipment levels in December, compared to the same month last year, with copper shipments up 13.0 percent to 9.3 million pounds and alloy shipments up 3.4 percent to 9.2 million pounds. Compared to the previous month, however, shipments of copper products declined by 0.5 percent, while alloy shipments were off 7.7 percent.
