FerrouSouth Claims New Flatness Crown

FerrouSouth has installed a new Herr-Voss three-roll pre-flattener on the front end of its Eliminator heavy-gauge stretcher leveling line in Iuka, Miss. The toll processor claims the new addition to the line gives it a one-of-a-kind capability to produce exceptionally flat high-strength steel.

With the pre-flattener in place, FerrouSouth can now produce dead-flat memory-free sheets from 110,000-yield steel up to one-half-inch thick and 96 inches wide--an accomplishment the company contends is new to the metal processing industry and unique to FerrouSouth.

"Solving shape and memory problems in wide, heavy-gauge, high-grade products has been a struggle for everyone in the business," says FerrouSouth President Ed Gonzalez. "Fortunately, we already have the country’s most powerful leveler and stretcher, so coupling this pre-flattener to our existing line yielded exceptional results. The addition of the pre-flattener has eliminated all the flatness problems that have plagued this type of material all across the U.S."

Herr-Voss Stamco, Callery, Pa., worked with FerrouSouth to engineer, manufacture and integrate the new three-roll flattener into the processor’s cut-to-length line. The flattener is designed to compensate for the limitations of the stretcher leveling process by eliminating crossbow on wide, heavy-gauge, big-grade product. The results have been exemplary, Gonzalez says. "Sheets coming off The Eliminator have been dead flat, completely memory free with no coil set, crossbow, wave or center buckle."

Memory-free steel is important for plasma, laser and flame cutting operations, which can run more efficiently without having to slow down or stop to deal with spring-back and warping issues.

FerrouSouth, part of Ferragon Corp., supplies OEMs, service centers and other customers in the southern U.S. with toll slitting, precision leveling and stretcher leveling of hot-rolled steel.
