Service Center Shipments Stall in August
 
Steel and aluminum shipments by service centers in the U.S. and Canada were flat to down slightly in August, reports the Metals Service Center Institute, Rolling Meadows, Ill.

U.S. service centers shipped 3.6 million tons of steel products in August, a 1.8 percent decrease from the previous month and about the same as August 2013. For the year to date, shipments increased 4 percent to 29.3 million tons.

Service center steel inventories totaled 9.0 million tons at the end of August, up 13.5 percent from August a year ago. At the August shipping rate, that represented 2.5 months of supply, up from 2.2 months last year.

U.S. service centers shipped 135,200 tons of aluminum in August, an increase of 1.6 percent from the same month in 2013. Year-to-date shipments totaled 1.08 million tons, an 8.2 percent increase from last year.

U.S. service center inventories of aluminum products totaled 404,200 tons at the end of August, up 3.8 percent from the previous month and 10.8 percent from a year ago. At the August shipping rate, that represented 3.0 months of supply, up from 2.7 months in August 2013.

Canadian service centers shipped 456,600 tons of steel in August, a 5.3 percent decline from the previous month and a 4.6 percent decline from August 2013. For the year to date, Canadian steel shipments of 3.9 million tons were flat with 2013.

Canadian steel product inventories totaled 1.5 million tons at the end of August, up slightly from the previous month and 8.0 percent from August a year ago. At August shipping rates, that represented 3.3 months of supply, up from 2.9 months last year.

Canadian service centers shipped 12,900 tons of aluminum in August, down 6.5 percent from the previous month, but up 2 percent from the same month in 2013. Year-to-date shipments of aluminum totaled 107,500 tons, an increase of 2.4 percent from last year.

Canadian inventories of aluminum products totaled 41,200 tons in August, up 6.7 percent from the previous month and 15 percent from August 2013. At August shipping rates, that represented 3.2 months of supply, up from 2.8 months last year.
