Service Center Shipments Rebound in September
 
After a decline the previous month, steel and aluminum shipments by service centers in the U.S. and Canada were up across the board in September, reports the Metals Service Center Institute, Rolling Meadows, Ill.

U.S. service centers shipped 3.7 million tons of steel products in September, up 8.3 percent from the same month in 2013 and 0.7 percent from August. For the year to date, steel shipments increased 4.4 percent to 32.9 million tons.

Service center steel inventories totaled 9.3 million tons at the end of the month, up 16.4 percent from September 2013 and up 3.6 percent compared to the previous month. At the September shipping rate, that represented 2.6 months of supply, up from 2.4 months last year.

U.S. service centers shipped 134,100 tons of aluminum in September, up 10.2 percent from the same month last year, but a slight decline from August. Year-to-date shipments totaled 1.22 million tons, an 8.5 percent increase from last year.

U.S. service center inventories of aluminum products totaled 407,600 tons at the end of September, up 12.4 percent from 2013 and 0.8 percent from the previous month. At the September shipping rate, that represented 3.0 months of supply, flat with last year.

Canadian service centers shipped 494,400 tons of steel in September, a 4.1 percent increase from September 2013 and an 8.3 percent increase from August. For the year to date, Canadian steel shipments of 4.4 million tons were flat with 2013.

Canadian steel product inventories totaled 1.5 million tons at the end of the month, up 16.5 percent from the same month last year and 0.7 percent from the previous month. At September shipping rates, that represented 3.1 months of supply, up from 2.7 months last year.

Canadian service centers shipped 14,400 tons of aluminum in September, an increase of 15.8 percent from last year and up 11.6 percent from August. Year-to-date shipments of aluminum totaled 121,900 tons, an increase of 3.8 percent from last year.

Canadian inventories of aluminum products totaled 40,400 tons in September, up 15.5 percent from September 2013, but down 1.9 percent from the previous month. At September shipping rates, that represented 3.1 months of supply, up from 2.7 months last year.
