MSCI: Aluminum Up, Steel Down in February

Service center shipments of aluminum products in the U.S. increased in February, while shipments of steel continued to decline, reports the Metals Service Center Institute, Rolling Meadows, Ill. Results for the month were similar in Canada.

U.S. service centers shipped 3.3 million tons of steel products in February, down 1.4 percent from February 2014 and 3.4 percent from the previous month.

Service center steel inventories totaled 9.9 million tons at the end of the month, up 15.1 percent over February a year ago and down slightly from the previous month. At February shipping rates, that represented 3.0 months of supply, up from 2.5 months the previous year.

U.S. service centers shipped 128,500 tons of aluminum products in February, an increase of 3.7 percent from the same month in 2014, but down 1.4 percent from January.

U.S. service center inventories of aluminum products totaled 409,600 tons at the end of February, up 9.0 percent from February a year ago and 0.5 percent from January. At February shipping rates, that represented 3.2 months of supply, up from 3.0 months the previous year.

Canadian service centers shipped 423,300 tons of steel products in February, a decreased of 5.6 percent from February 2014 and 4.8 percent from January.

Canadian steel product inventories totaled 1.7 million tons at the end of February, a 21.0 percent increase from February a year ago and about the same as January.

Canadian service centers shipped 12,500 tons of aluminum products in February, a 4.3 percent increase from the same month in 2014, but a 6.0 percent decline from January.

Canadian inventories of aluminum products totaled 43,100 tons in February, up 9.7 percent from February a year ago, but down slightly from January. At February shipping rates, that represented 3.5 months of supply, up from 3.3 months the prior year.
