The greatest gains were made in the Americas, where production increased 14.6 percent to 2.8 million tons in 2014. That followed a 3.6 percent production gain in 2013.

China, the world’s leading producer, saw growth similar to North America, up 14.3 percent to 21.7 million tons. The Western Europe/Africa and Asia (without China) regions grew modestly in 2014.
