is busy gathering information for this year’s Top 50 ranking of North America’s largest metals service centers, which we will publish in our September print edition. Preliminary data shows the ranking will range from the No. 1 company with over $10 billion in annual sales to the No. 50 company with around $150 million. Does your company belong in the Top 50? We try to make our ranking as complete and comprehensive as possible, but there undoubtedly are service centers that slip through the cracks. In most cases, they are companies that “prefer to stay under the radar” and decline to cooperate. In other cases, they may be large distributors of specialized products, such as pipe and tube, that don’t consider themselves “service” centers because they don’t offer much processing. If a company distributes a lot of metal, we want them on our list.
The ranking, which is based on total distribution revenues from the last completed fiscal year, generally does not change much from year to year. Individual company sales tend to increase at a comparable rate based on prevailing market conditions, leaving their relative positions about the same. Mergers and acquisitions over the years have altered the ranking considerably, but any changes this year should be relatively small since there have been no big M&A announcements of late.
MCN’s ranking is a way to recognize the achievements of the industry’s leaders. It’s also a shopping list of sorts for venture capital firms and other investors looking to buy into the metals market. In the aggregate, stats gathered from the Top 50 offer a means to measure the general health of the service center industry as a whole.
