Global Steel Production Behind 2014

World crude steel production for the 65 countries reporting to the Brussels-based World Steel Association totaled 132 million tons in August, a 3 percent decrease from the same month in 2014. For the year to date, global production was down 2.3 percent to 1.1 billion tons.

The crude steel capacity utilization rate in August was 68.0 percent, 3.6 percentage points lower than August 2014. Compared to July, capacity utilization was down 0.4 percentage points.

The U.S. produced 7.0 million tons of crude steel in August, down 9.7 percent. For the full year, U.S. production declined 8.5 percent to 54.0 million tons. Canadian production of 1.1 million tons was down 0.7 percent for the month. For the full year, Canadian production inched up 0.6 percent to 8.5 million tons. Mexican production declined 7.1 percent in August to 1.5 million tons, and dipped 4.4 percent for the year to 12.3 million tons.

China’s crude steel production in August was 66.9 million tons, down 3.5 percent compared to 2014. Japan produced 8.8 million tons of crude steel in August, a decrease of 5.8 percent, while South Korean production increased 2.8 percent to 5.8 million tons.

In the EU, Germany produced 3.4 million tons of crude steel, an increase of 10.7 percent compared to the same month last year. France’s production for August was 1.0 million tons, a decrease of 1.5 percent, while Italy’s production of 1.0 million tons was up 1.3 percent from the prior year.

Russia produced 6.0 million tons of crude steel, down 3.2 percent, while Ukraine’s production of 1.9 million tons was up 8.6 percent from August 2014.
