Pacesetter Steel Boss Champions 'Talent and Tech'

Before becoming CEO of Georgia-based distributor Pacesetter Steel, Aviva Leebow Wolmer served as the company's "vice president of people." Her new perspective from the top office hasn’t altered her view of the company’s workforce and its value to the organization.

Speaking at October's CRU North American Steel 2015 Conference in Chicago, Leebow Wolmer noted that the steel industry is unpredictable and uncertain. The best way to deal with that, she said, is to focus instead on the aspects of business that can be controlled—namely “talent and tech.”

Staying at the forefront of rapid and unexpected technological advances is crucial to staying relevant. So too is cultivating a productive workforce, she emphasized.

She directed the gathered executives to ask themselves a series of questions about what they’re doing to develop the strongest, most complete workforce possible:

• Do you have a strong educational and development program for all of your associates, at all levels? When was the last time you revamped these programs due to new learning methods and technologies?

• Do you have clear career paths and succession plans?

• Do you have a formal reward and recognition program, and does it energize your team members?

• Do your team members coach and learn from one another? Do your leaders give consistent feedback to their people?

• Do you have open communication throughout your organization on your strategies, goals and vision?

• Are your team members engaged, bringing ideas to you to do things differently, to improve and to innovate?

Much of what happens to a service center is dependent on the economy, but hiring, motivating and retaining a talented workforce is within every company’s control regardless of market conditions.
