Global Steel Production Dips 7.1%

World crude steel production totaled 128 million tons in January, a 7.1 percent decline compared with the same month in 2015, reports the World Steel Association in Brussels.

The crude steel capacity utilization rate of the 66 countries reporting to WSA averaged 66.0 percent, 5.8 percentage points lower than January 2015. Compared to December, mill utilization was up 0.8 of a percentage point.

The U.S. produced 6.6 million tons during January, an 8.8 percent decline compared to the same month last year. Canadian production of 1.1 million tons was down 1.2 percent from 2015, while Mexican production declined 9.0 percent to 1.5 million tons.

China’s crude steel production in January totaled 63.2 million tons, a decrease of 7.8 percent compared to the same month last year. Elsewhere in Asia, Japan produced 8.8 million tons of crude steel, a decrease of 2.8 percent, while South Korean production declined 4.5 percent to 5.7 million tons.

In the EU, Germany produced 3.6 million tons of crude steel, a decrease of 2.0 percent compared to January 2015. Italy’s production of 1.8 million tons was down 5.3 percent, while Spain’s production declined 9.5 percent to 1.2 million tons.

Turkey and Ukraine were the only significant global producers to see increases in the first month of this year. Turkey’s production of 2.6 million tons was up 0.8 percent, while Ukraine’s production climbed 3.6 percent to 1.9 million tons.

Brazilian steel mills experienced the largest downturn, with production declining 17.9 percent to 2.5 million tons.
