Global Steel Production Down 5.2 Percent

World crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting to the Brussels-based World Steel Association totaled 120 million tons in February, a 3.3 percent decline from the same month last year. Through two months, global steel production declined 5.2 percent to 247 million tons.

The crude steel capacity utilization rate in February was 66.2 percent, 5.7 percentage points lower than February 2015. Capacity utilization increased 0.9 of a percentage point from January.

The U.S. produced 6.4 million tons in February, an increase of 2.9 percent from February 2015. Through the first two months, U.S. production declined 4.6 percent to 12.8 million tons.

Canada’s crude steel production increased 17.3 percent in February to 1.1 million tons. Its year-to-date production of 2.2 million tons was up 11.8 percent from 2015. Mexican production of 1.3 million tons was down 10.3 percent, while two-month production of 2.7 million tons was 11.8 percent behind the pace of 2015.

China’s crude steel production in February totaled 58.5 million tons, a decrease of 4.0 percent compared to 2015. Elsewhere in Asia, Japan produced 8.4 million tons of crude steel, a decrease of 1.0 percent, while South Korea’s production of 5.3 tons was up 5.0 percent.

In the EU, Germany produced 3.4 million tons of crude steel in February, a decrease of 4.3 percent. Italy produced 1.9 million tons of crude steel, down 2.1 percent, while France’s production of 1.3 million tons was up 2.6 percent.

Turkey’s crude steel production in February totaled 2.4 million tons, up 4.0 percent compared with February 2015, while Russia’s production declined 2.7 percent to 5.7 million tons.
