Global Steel Production Below 2015 Pace

World crude steel production of 137.3 million tons declined 0.5 percent in March compared with the same month last year, reports the World Steel Association, Brussels. Through the first three months, global production of 385.7 million tons declined 3.6 percent from 2015. The crude steel capacity utilization rate of the 66 countries averaged 70.5 percent, which was 1.3 percentage points lower than March 2015. Utilization rates were up 3.9 percentage points compared with the prior month.

Steel production in the United States in March increased 4.9 percent to 6.7 million tons. For the year to date, domestic crude steel production dipped 1.3 percent to 19.6 million tons.

Elsewhere in North America, Canadian production of 1.1 million tons was up 7.9 percent in March, while year-to-date production of 3.5 million tons was up 10.6 percent compared with 2015. Mexico produced 1.5 million tons in March, down 1.5 percent for the month, while the year-to-date total of 4.4 million tons was down 6.6 percent.

China’s crude steel production totaled 70.7 million tons, an increase of 2.9 percent compared to March 2015. Elsewhere in Asia, Japan produced 8.6 million tons of crude steel in March, a decrease of 6.8 percent, while South Korea’s production of 5.4 million tons declined 8.4 percent.

In the EU, Germany produced 3.8 million tons in March, down 1.6 percent. Italy’s production of 2.0 million tons was down 3.5 percent. Turkey’s crude steel production increased 1.3 percent to 2.7 million tons.
