Use of Aluminum Extrusions on the Increase

Domestic consumption of aluminum extrusions increased in 2015 for the fifth straight year, reports the Aluminum Extruders Council, Wauconda, Ill. Consumption of extrusions, including imports, totaled 5.11 billion pounds in 2015, an increase of 4.6 percent over 2014 and near the peak year of 2006.

“What is most exciting about these results is the growth the industry is realizing overall, especially in automotive applications,” says Jeff Henderson, AEC president. “Even though our largest end-use category, building and construction, grew a modest 4.5 percent last year, it was the fourth consecutive year we’ve seen increases. However, unlike four years ago, the base has grown. So now, these increases are actually reflective of significant volumes for extrusion producers.”

Aluminum extrusions, which are made by forcing heated aluminum through dies of various shapes, are the third-largest product segment in the domestic aluminum industry, representing about 22 percent of the total aluminum market in North America.

Building and construction continues to be the largest market segment in the extrusion sector with domestic shipments of 1.91 billion pounds, or 37.4 percent of the domestic market. Transportation represented 31.8 percent of extrusion shipments, and grew 8.7 percent over 2014.

Other market sectors include electrical at 10.4 percent, consumer durables at 9.5 percent, machinery and equipment at 9.4 percent and other end uses at 1.4 percent. U.S. and Canadian producers also exported 303 million pounds of aluminum extrusions in 2015, representing 5.6 percent of total industry shipments.
