Six-Month Service Center Shipments Trail 2015

Service center shipments of steel and aluminum products lagged 2016 through the first half of the year, reports the Metals Service Center Institute, Rolling Meadows, Ill. Year-to-date shipments of both products from U.S. and Canadian service centers ranged from 4 to 10 percent behind the prior year.

U.S. service centers shipped 3.4 million tons of steel products in June, down 5.1 percent from the same month in 2015, but up 5.6 percent from May. For the year to date, shipments of 19.4 million tons were down 6.9 percent compared with 2015.

Service center steel inventories totaled 7.6 million tons at the end of the month, a decrease of 16.5 percent from June 2015, but up 0.8 percent from the previous month. At June shipping rates, that represented 2.3 months of supply, down from 2.6 percent the previous year.

U.S. service centers shipped 133,600 tons of aluminum during the month, down 6.5 percent from June 2015, but up 4.6 percent from the prior month. Year-to-date aluminum shipments of 777,500 tons were down 4.5 percent from last year.

U.S. service center inventories of aluminum products totaled 391,200 tons at the end of the month, down 1.5 percent from June 2015, but up 1.4 percent from the prior month. At June shipping rates, that represented 2.9 months of supply, up from 2.8 months the prior year.

Canadian service centers shipped 374,100 tons of steel in June, a 14.4 percent decrease from the same month in 2015 and down 3.7 percent from May. Year-to-date shipments of 2.3 million tons were down 7.4 percent from 2015.

Canadian steel product inventories totaled 1.1 million tons at the end of the month, down 26.0 percent from the same month in 2015 and 2.6 percent from May. At June shipping rates, that represented 3.0 months of supply, down from 3.5 months the previous year.

Canadian service centers shipped 10,800 tons of aluminum during the month, a decrease of 16.5 percent from the previous year and flat with May. Shipments through the first five months of 2016 totaled 63,400 tons, a decrease of 10.9 percent from 2015.

Canadian inventories of aluminum products totaled 30,800 tons at the end of the month, down 15.9 percent from June 2015 and 0.9 percent from the prior month. At June shipping rates, that represented 2.8 months of supply, flat with the same month in 2015.
