Obituary: John Anthony Campo, Jr.

Retired steel executive John Anthony Campo, Jr., died Sept. 30 at age 74 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. He worked for several steel companies before retiring from O’Neal Steel in 2012.

The native of Philadelphia joined the Navy after graduating from LaSalle College in 1965. He retired from active duty in the Navy in 1969, but remained in the Naval Reserve until 1995. He began his steel career with the Alan Wood Steel Co., which was acquired by Lukens Steel. In 1993, he joined a division of British Steel in Tuscaloosa, serving as vice president of sales and marketing.

After a brief retirement, he joined O’Neal Steel in Birmingham as vice president of market development and contract management, and remained a consultant to the company after his retirement in 2012.

He is survived by his wife Katherine, two daughters and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 811 Fifth Ave., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401, in honor of the John Campo Scholarship Fund.
