Chinese Drive Up Global Stainless Production

Global stainless steel production totaled 22.1 million metric tons through the first half of 2016, reports the International Stainless Steel Forum in Brussels, up 4.1 percent from 2016.

Production growth in Asia drove the overall gains, with Chinese production increasing 7.9 percent to 11.7 million tons. The rest of Asia also increased production 3.4 percent to 8 million tons in the first half.

Production in the Americas showed the biggest regional decline in the first half, falling 6.2 percent to 1.4 million tons. Western Europe/African production declined 1.4 percent to 4.0 million tons.
