Gerdau to Idle Calvert City Bar Mill

Gerdau Long Products North America will idle its Calvert City, Ky., bar mill by the end of November. The company cites the world’s excess steel capacity as the reason it’s closing the plant.

Gerdau says the Calvert City mill simply has not been cost-competitive in recent years, despite several changes within the facility to improve operating efficiencies. The mill rolls angles, channels and flats. It has an annual production capacity of 280,000 metric tons.
