Canadian Steelmaker Revives Stelco Name

As U.S. Steel Canada nears completion of the mill’s sale to Bedrock Industries Group, securing its exit from bankruptcy protection, the new owners have decided to revive the Stelco name with the relaunch of Canada’s national steel company. “This begins a new era for Stelco, one that is built on a legacy of pride and presents great opportunity for our company, our employees and our community going forward,” says Michael McQuade, Stelco president and general manager.

The company is in the process of recruiting a new workforce, including professionals in the areas of sales, finance, operations and information technology.

Stelco’s facilities include Hamilton Works, a producer of coke to support operations at Lake Erie Works and the home to the company’s cold-rolled and coated steel production facilities. The company’s Z-Line has the capacity to produce 470,000 tons of coated products annually.

The Lake Erie Works operation consists of a coke battery, blast furnace, two steelmaking vessels, a twin-strand slab caster, hot-strip mill and three pickling lines.
