Nucor Makes Third Buy in Tubulars

Nucor Corp. made its third foray into the pipe and tube market in the past three months with the purchase of Republic Conduit. The steelmaker bought the steel electrical conduit business from Tenaris last month for approximately $335 million. The deal follows closely on Nucor’s recent acquisitions of Independence Tube and Southland Tube, giving the Charlotte, N.C., steelmaker a strong foothold in the tubular products market.

Republic Conduit produces electrogalvanized electrical metallic tubing and intermediate metal conduit, as well as hot-dip galvanized electrical rigid metal conduit, used widely in the construction industry. It operates facilities in Louisville, Ky., and Cedar Springs, Ga.

"The purchase of Republic Conduit complements our recent expansion of Nucor's presence in the pipe and tube market and gives us a new line of value-added products to offer our customers,” says John Ferriola, chairman, CEO and president of Nucor.

"Republic Conduit, while being a valuable asset, is not in Tenaris' core business. With Nucor, we expect Republic Conduit will continue growing and improving its operations,” says Paolo Rocca, chairman and CEO of Luxembourg-based Tenaris.
