U.S. Steel Mill Shipments End Year Even with 2015

U.S. steel mills shipped 86.5 million net tons of steel in 2016, nearly the same as in 2015, following a strong December, reports the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington. U.S. steelmakers shipped 7.2 million net tons in December, a 6.7 percent increase from the previous month and a 9.4 percent increase from December 2015.

A comparison of December 2016 shipments to the previous month shows the following changes: hot-rolled sheet, up 11 percent; cold-rolled sheet, up 4 percent; and hot-dipped galvanized sheet and strip, down 3 percent.

Based on the Commerce Department’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis data, AISI reports that steel import permit applications for January totaled more than 2.9 million net tons, an 8.5 percent increase from the December final imports total. Import permit tonnage for finished steel in January totaled 2.3 million tons, up 7.7 percent. Imports’ market share in January is estimated at 25 percent.

Finished steel imports with large increases in January permits versus the December final included: hot-rolled strip, up 89 percent; standard rails, up 45 percent; reinforcing bars, up 43 percent; standard pipe, up 39 percent; cut-length plates, up 33 percent; sheets and strip all other metallic coatings, up 29 percent; oil country goods, up 15 percent; cold-rolled sheets, up 15 percent; and wire rods, up 11 percent.

In January, the largest finished steel import permit applications, compared with December’s final imports, were for South Korea, 326,000 net tons, up 21 percent; Turkey, 271,000 tons, up 75 percent; Taiwan, 131,000 tons, down 11 percent; Japan, 126,000 tons, up 10 percent; and Vietnam, 101,000 tons, up 77 percent.
