Service Center Shipments Jump in January

Service center shipments of steel and aluminum in both the United States and Canada increased substantially in January, reports the Metals Service Center Institute, Rolling Meadows, Ill.

U.S. service centers shipped 3.3 million tons of steel products in January, up 9.4 percent from January 2016, and a 29 percent increase from the previous month. Service center steel inventories totaled 7.3 million tons at the end of the month, a decrease of 8.3 percent from last year, but an increase of about 1 percent from December. At January’s shipping rates, that represented 2.2 months of supply, down from 2.6 months in 2016.

U.S. service centers shipped 133,200 tons of aluminum products in January, an increase of 8.3 percent from January 2016, and an increase of 25 percent from the previous month. U.S. service center inventories of aluminum products totaled 386,700 tons at the end of the month, an increase of 1.2 percent from a year ago, and up 0.6 percent from December. At January’s shipping rates, that represented 2.9 months of supply, down from 3.1 months in 2016.

Canadian service centers shipped 411,800 tons of steel products (excluding structurals) in January, up 5.7 percent from January 2016, and an increase of 42 percent from the prior month. Service center steel inventories totaled 1.2 million tons at the end of the month, a decrease of 5.8 percent from January a year ago, but about the same as the prior month. At January’s shipping rates, that represented 2.9 months of supply, down from 3.2 months in 2016.

Canadian service centers shipped 10,900 tons of aluminum products in January, up 10.3 percent from the same month in 2016, and an increase of 45 percent from December. Canadian inventories of aluminum products totaled 30,700 tons at the end of the month, an increase of 0.7 percent from a year ago, and about the same as December. At January shipping rates, that represented 2.8 months of supply, down from 3.1 months in January 2016.
