Global Steel Production Up 4.5 Percent in First Half

World crude steel production totaled 141.0 million tons in June, a 3.2 percent increase from the previous year, reports the Brussels-based World Steel Association. Total production of 836.0 million tons was up 4.5 percent compared with 2016.

The crude steel capacity utilization rate of the 67 countries reporting to WSW was 73.0 percent in June, an increase of 1.4 percentage points from June 2016. The rate was also up 1.3 percentage points from May.

June production in the United States declined 1.7 percent to 6.8 million tons. Year-to-date production was up 1.3 percent to 40.6 million tons.

Canadian production in June was down 11.5 percent to 970 million tons, while production for the year to date declined 1.7 percent to 6.5 million tons. Mexico’s production in June increased 1.0 percent to 1.7 million tons, while full-year production of 10.0 million pounds was up 11.1 percent from last year.

China’s crude steel production in June increased 5.7 percent to 73.2 million tons. Japan’s production decreased 4.3 percent to 8.4 million tons, while South Korea’s production increased 7.7 percent to 5.9 million tons.

In the EU, Germany produced 3.6 million tons of crude steel, a decrease of 1.7 percent. Italy’s production of 2.1 million tons was up 1.8 percent, and France’s production increased 1.3 percent to 1.3 million tons.

Turkey’s crude steel production in June increased 7.1 percent to 3.0 million tons, while Brazil’s increased 4.0 percent to 2.6 million tons.
