U.S. Steel, Aluminum Shipments Ahead of 2016 Pace

The early trends of 2017 continued through June, with shipments of all products except Canadian aluminum showing modest gains over the same month in 2016, reports the Rolling Meadows, Ill.-based Metals Service Center Institute in its latest Metals Activity Report.

U.S. service centers shipped 3.4 million tons of steel products in June, an increase of 1.0 percent from the same month last year, but down 0.2 percent from the previous month. Year-to-date shipments of 20.1 million tons were up 3.5 percent from 2016.

Service center steel inventories totaled 7.3 million tons at the end of June, a decrease of 4.9 percent from 2016, but up 0.3 percent from May. At June shipping rates, that represented 2.1 months of supply, down from 2.3 months in 2016.

U.S. service centers shipped 147,400 tons of aluminum products during the month, an increase of 10.3 percent from the same month in 2016 and up 3.5 percent May. Full-year shipments increased 7.1 percent to 832,900 tons.
U.S. service center inventories of aluminum products totaled 391,900 tons in June, an increase of 0.2 percent from last year, but down 0.5 percent from the previous month. At June shipping rates, that represented 2.87 months of supply, down from 2.9 months during the same month of 2016.

Canadian service centers shipped 392.600 tons of steel products during the month, an increase of 5.0 percent from the same month in 2016, but down 5.4 percent from May. For the year to date, shipments increased 2.4 percent to 2.4 million tons.

Service center steel inventories in Canada totaled 1.1 million tons at the end of the month, an increase of 1.6 percent from June 2016 and up 2.6 percent from the prior month. At June shipping rates, that represented 2.9 months of supply, down from 3.0 months from the same time last year.

Canadian service centers shipped 10,500 tons of aluminum products in June, a decrease of 2.5 percent from May 2016 and down 6.2 percent from the previous month. Year-to-date aluminum shipments of 62,700 tons were down 1.1 percent from 2016.

Canadian inventories of aluminum products totaled 30,400 tons at the end of June, a decrease of 1.1 percent from a year ago and down 0.3 percent from the prior month. At June shipping rates, that represented 2.9 months of supply, up from 2.8 months for the same month of 2016.
