Crude Steel Production Up 5.9 Percent in October

World crude steel production totaled 145.3 million metric tons in October, a year-over-year increase of 5.9 percent, according to Brussels-based World Steel Association. Total production through the first 10 months of 2017 is up 5.6 percent at 1.4 billion tons, compared with 1.3 billion tons through October 2016.

The crude steel capacity utilization rate of the 66 countries reporting to WSA was 73 percent in October, an increase of 3 percentage points from the same time last year. Capacity utilization was up 0.6 percentage points from September.

In October, the U.S. produced 7 million tons of crude steel, up 12 percent from last year. Year-to-date production is up 3.9 percent at 68.4 million tons. Production in Canada jumped 13.4 percent year over year to 1.1 million tons in October, while total production through 10 months is up 2.7 percent at 10.9 million tons. Mexico’s production in October decreased 2.6 percent to 1.7 million tons, while full-year production of 16.7 million tons is 6.4 percent higher than at the same point last year.

China’s crude steel production in October increased 6.1 percent to 72.4 million tons, Japan’s production decreased 1 percent to 9 million tons and India’s production increased 5.3 percent to 8.6 million tons.

In the European Union, Germany produced an estimated 3.6 million tons of crude steel during the month, a year-over-year increase of 2.7 percent; Italy produced 2.3 million tons, up 6.1 percent; France produced 1.4 million tons, up 1.6 percent; and Spain produced 1.3 million tons, up 11.9 percent from October 2016.

Elsewhere in Europe, Turkey’s crude steel production jumped 11.1 percent in October to 3.3 million tons.
