Global Steel Production Increases in November

Global crude steel production increased 3.7 percent in November compared with the same month in 2016, reports the Brussels-based World Steel Association. Through the first 11 months of 2017, global production of 1.54 billion tons was up 5.4 percent over 2016.

The crude steel capacity utilization rate of the 66 countries was 70.7 percent in November, 1.5 percentage points higher than the same month last year. Compared with the prior month, utilization was 2.2 percentage points lower.

Production in the United States totaled 6.7 million tons in November, an 8.5 percent increase over November 2016. For the year to date, U.S. production was up 4.1 percent to 74.9 million tons.

Canadian production increased 32 percent to 1.3 million tons in November and was up 8.4 percent for the full year to 12.6 million tons. Mexican production declined 3.1 percent during the month to 1.6 million tons, but remained up 5.5 percent for the year to date at 18.3 million tons.

China’s crude steel production in November totaled 66.2 million tons, an increase of 2.2 percent over the same month in 2016. Japanese production increased 1 percent to 8.7 million tons, and South Korean production declined 0.9 percent to 5.7 million tons.

In the EU, Italy’s crude steel production was 2.2 million tons, an increase of 3.3 percent. Production in France fell 8.7 percent to 1.2 million tons.

Turkey’s crude steel production in November was 3.1 million tons, an increase of 7 percent. Russian production increased 1.4 percent to 6 million tons.
