December Shipments Up in U.S.; Down in Canada

U.S. steel and aluminum shipments increased year-over-year in December, but Canadian shipments continued to decline, according to the latest Metals Activity Report from Rolling Meadows, Ill.-based Metals Service Center Institute.

U.S. service centers shipped 2.7 million tons of steel products in December, up 2.8 percent from the same month last year, but down 15.9 percent from November. Full-year shipments of 38.8 million tons were 3.8 percent higher than last year’s total.

Service center steel inventories totaled 7.7 million tons at the end of the month, a year-over-year increase of 6.8 percent and a month-to-month increase of 1.7 percent. At December shipping rates, that represents 2.9 months of supply, up from 2.8 months in December 2016.

U.S. service centers shipped 119,400 tons of aluminum products during the month, a 12.5 percent increase from the year-ago period, but down 9.5 percent from November. Full-year shipments of 1.6 million tons were up 8.5 percent from 2016.

U.S. service center inventories of aluminum products totaled 391,400 tons in December, an increase of 1.9 percent year over year, but down 0.2 percent from the previous month. At December shipping rates, that represents 3.3 months of supply, down from 3.6 months a year ago.

Canadian service centers shipped 280,100 tons of steel products during the month, down 3.4 percent from December 2016 and 29.8 percent from the previous month. Total shipments in 2017 increased 2.7 percent year over year to 4.5 million tons.

Service center steel inventories in Canada totaled 1.1 million tons at the end of the month, a 3.1 percent decrease from last year and relatively flat with November. At December shipping rates, that represents 4.0 months of supply, which is equal to last year.

Canadian service centers shipped 7,300 tons of aluminum products in December, down 2.4 percent from the same month last year and 30.5 percent from November. Full-year aluminum shipments were down 0.7 percent in 2017 at 121,500 tons.

Canadian inventories of aluminum products totaled 31,900 tons at the end of the month, up 4.7 percent from last December and 1.9 percent from November. At December shipping rates, that represented 4.4 months of supply, up from 4.1 months a year ago.
