Kentucky Electric Steel to Close

Kentucky Electric Steel in Ashland, Ky., will permanently shutter its facility, according to numerous news reports in the Kentucky city. The company revealed its plans in a letter to Ashland Mayor Steve Gilmore.

KES produces bar flats in both merchant bar quality and special bar quality. The minimill manufacturers more than 2,600 different bar items. It sells into the cold-drawn bar converter and truck trailer support beam markets.

The closure will affect 113 workers at the facility. The closure is expected to begin this quarter.

KES is owned by Specialty Steel Works Inc., Hammond, Ind., which had been known as Optima Specialty Steel before emerging from bankruptcy protection in 2017. In addition to KES, SSWI operates Michigan Seamless Tube, Niagara LaSalle Corp. and Corey Steel Co.
