Top 10 Service Center Equipment Brands

Service center executives reveal their favorite makes of metal processing equipment in this informal brand survey by Metal Center News.

By Tim Triplett, Editor-in-Chief

Herr-Voss Stamco, HE&M Saw, MG Systems and Kasto lead their respective categories in Metal Center News’ new Top 10 Service Center Equipment Brands lists for 2009.

Replacing MCN’s Top 20 Equipment Brands list of the past several years, the most recent data ranks companies by equipment type. Comparing apples to apples—or saw company to saw company, for example—should be more useful to service centers that are considering equipment purchases.

Information for these brand rankings was compiled as part of MCN’s Outlook survey conducted in October and November 2008, as well as the magazine’s December 2008 poll of toll processors. These lists of companies, ranked by their total number of votes, gives a rough indication of which brands currently command the largest share of mind, and highest levels of customer satisfaction, among service center executives.

In the top-of-mind methodology used in past surveys, respondents were simply asked to write in the equipment vendors they would endorse and buy from in the future. In the most recent polls, respondents were given an alphabetical list of the 14 largest companies in each category with instructions to check all they would endorse and buy from in the future. Respondents also had the opportunity to write in additional company names or brands not on the lists. The result was an improved return and more specific information.

This new format still does not attempt to rank companies by size or market share, but rather to measure the relative level of brand awareness they have achieved among respondents to the survey.

Given the state of the economy and weak demand for metals, most service centers have cut their capital spending budgets. Once the market rebounds and they begin upgrading equipment again, all these leading equipment vendors deserve buyers’ careful consideration.
