Steel Warehouse, Triple S Steel Join Forces in Temper Mill Venture

Two of the country’s largest steel service centers have entered a joint venture to construct a new 1-inch capacity temper mill cut-to-length line in Houston. Steel Warehouse Co., South Bend, Ind., and Triple S Steel, Houston, will partner on the new line, to be constructed in the next 10 to 12 months.

The project combines Steel Warehouse’s knowledge of temper mill lines and Triple S Steel’s familiarity with the southwestern steel market.

"While historically, neither one of us has had many partners, we wanted to partner with Steel Warehouse on this project because our company has limited experience in flat-rolled processing and they are the true experts. More importantly, because the Steins and the Lermans share a similar culture and commitment to the steel industry, to our employees and to family ownership, we are confident in our ability to succeed,” says Gary Stein, CEO of Triple-S.

“Gary is an old friend and a guy everybody respects. This combines his knowledge of the market and the customer base with our knowledge of the equipment and how to sell the product,” says Dave Lerman, Steel Warehouse CEO.

Steel Warehouse has experience operating temper mills at several of its facilities, including Chattanooga, Monterrey and Quad Cities. While the company has not been heavily involved in other joint ventures, it does operate one at Quad Cities with Norfolk Iron and Metal Co., Norfolk, Neb. “With the right people, it works,” Lerman adds.
