Pennsylvania Steel Co., Bensalem, Pa., has made its first expansion into the Southeast with the acquisition of Schwartz Steel Service, Gastonia, N.C. The 30-year-old company serves the Western Carolinas with a complete line of metal products, specializing in carbon bar.

Pennsylvania Steel currently services the Middle Atlantic and New England manufacturing markets with a full line of metal products, with six warehouse facilities in those regions. The Schwartz Steel Division will offer the complete line of Pennsylvania Steel products including cold-finished bar, stainless steel bar, alloy steel bar, carbon tubing, aluminum bar, aluminum plate and tool steels. 

“It’s obviously a new geographical market for us. But it was the right kind of company for us,” says Barry Walsh, president and chief operating officer of Pennsylvania Steel.
The current management will remain in place, including general manager Benjamin Schwartz, as will the rest of the staff. Pennsylvania Steel anticipates bringing more personnel on to accommodate growth.

“We definitely look to expand, with new trucks, new saws and additional warehouse space. We’re ratcheting up the entire operation on many fronts,” Walsh says.
