Global Stainless Production Climbs in Q1

Global stainless steel meltshop production increased 9.5 percent through the first three months of 2018, reports the International Stainless Steel Forum, Brussels. Production totaled 12.8 million tons in the quarter.
U.S. production defied the year-over-year trend, falling 0.4 percent to 718,000 tons in the first quarter. Production was up 9.8 percent compared with the fourth quarter.
Chinese production showed the greatest gains compared with the first quarter of 2017, increasing 6.6 percent to 6.5 million tons. Production in Asia excluding China and South Korea was up 4 percent to 2.1 million tons, and European production increased 1.7 percent to 2 million tons.
Production in rest of the world, a group which includes Russia, South Africa, Brazil, South Korea and Indonesia, increased 70.2 percent to 1.3 million tons in the quarter.
