Global Production Remains Down in May

World crude steel production was 169.5 million tons in May for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association. The total was a decline of 3.5 percent compared with the same month in 2021.
For the year to date, global crude steel production was down 6.3 percent to 791.8 million tons.
The U.S. produced 7.2 million tons in May, down 2.6 percent compared with the same month last year. Year-to-date production in the U.S. was down 1.6 percent to 34.3 million tons.
Overall in North America, production in May declined 4 percent to 9.9 million tons. For the year to date, production is off 2.3 percent to 47.5 million tons.
China was again the primary cause of the overall decline, as the country’s output was down 3.5 percent to 435 million tons. Chinese production is down 8.7 percent to 435 million tons for the year to date.
India remained the global outlier as the only country among the top 10 producers to increase production in May. Indian production was up 17.3 percent to 10.6 million tons, while year-to-date production of 53.2 million tons represented a 6.5 percent increase.
