Global Steel Dips to Start Year

World crude steel production for the 71 countries reporting to the worldsteel was 148.1 million metric tons in January, a 1.6 percent decrease compared with the same month last year.

U.S. crude steel production during the month totaled 6.8 million tons, a 0.3 percent decline from January 2023. Production in North America declined 2.1 percent to 9.2 million tons in January.

The global decline was driven by China, where production of 77.2 million tons was down 6.9 percent from January 2023. India, in contrast, saw increased production of 7.3 percent to 12 million tons.

Elsewhere among the top five producers, Japan was up 0.6 percent to 7.3 million tons and Russian production increased 1.2 percent to 6.2 million tons.
