Global Steel Output Down in 2024

World crude steel production for the 71 countries reporting worldsteel totaled 144.5 million metric in December, a 5.6 percent increase compared with the same month in 2023.

For the year to date, global production remained down 0.9 percent to 1.8 billion tons.

U.S. steel mills produced 6.7 million tons in December, a 2.4 percent decline from the same month in 2023. Full-year production of 79.5 million tons was also off 2.4 percent compared with the prior year.

North American production in December decreased 4.3 percent to 8.8 million tons. The full-year production of 105.9 million tons was down 4.2 percent compared with 2023.

China reversed the production cutbacks seen for much of the year, producing 76 million tons in December, up 11.8 percent compared with the same month in 2023. India remained on the upswing as well, producing 9.5 percent more steel at 13.6 million.

For the full year, Indian production was up 6.3 percent to 149.6 million tons.
