Schmitt to be Honored by AIST

Mar 27, 2024 Charles Schmitt, president and CEO of SSAB Americas, will be named the Association for Iron & Steel Technology Steelmaker of the Year at AISTech 2024
–The Iron & Steel Technology Conference and Exposition.
One of AIST’s highest honors, the Steelmaker of the Year Award is given to an industry leader who has had a significant impact on the industry and on his or her business. Schmitt is awarded Steelmaker of the Year in recognition of his exemplary leadership, pioneering vision on the decarbonization of steelmaking for environmental sustainability, strong support for research and innovations, commitment to employee safety, excellent strategy on production efficiency and product quality, and dedication to a culture of inclusion and diversity, AIST claimed. Under Schmitt’s leadership, SSAB Americas has become a major player in the steel industry and a company of choice for many who aspire to work in the steel industry.
The award will be presented May 7 during the President’s Award Breakfast, one of the signature events of AISTech. The breakfast program will consist of the presentation of several board of directors awards.
Schmitt began his career in the steel industry with U.S. Steel Corporation’s management trainee program in 1985. In 1990, he joined IPSCO Steel Holdings. After the 2007 acquisition of IPSCO by SSAB, he was promoted to vice president and in 2011, he was promoted to SSAB’s group executive committee and appointed president of the SSAB Americas business division.
