Stainless Production Declines 8% in Q1

Global stainless steel production declined 8 percent in the first three months of 2020, the International Stainless Steel Forum reported. Production in the first quarter totaled 11.7 million tons.
U.S. production of 627,000 tons was down 10.9 percent compared with the same quarter last year, but was up 9.1 percent from the fourth quarter of 2019.
Chinese production of 6.9 million tons was down 9 percent compared with the prior year and off 12 percent from the prior quarter. European production declined 6.3 percent from first-quarter 2019, but was up 13.1 percent from the prior quarter. In Asia excluding China, production of 1.9 million tons was down 3.8 percent from the first quarter of 2019 and off 6.8 percent from the previous quarter.
