Steel Imports Decline vs. January 2023

The U.S. imported 1.9 million tons of finished steel in January, an increase of 18 percent compared with December, the American Iron and steel Institute reported. Finished steel imports were down 4.4 percent compared with the same month in 2023.
Total steel imports were 2.6 million tons, up 21.7 percent vs. December but down 2.4 percent compared with January 2023.
Finished steel import market share was an estimated 22 percent in January.
Key steel products with a significant import increase in January compared with December are sheets and strip all other metallic coatings, up 190 percent; hot-rolled bars, up 66 percent; and cut-length plates, up 44 percent.
In January, the largest suppliers were Canada at 627,000 tons, up 16 percent vs. December; Brazil at 468,000 tons, up 40 percent; Mexico at 396,000 tons, up 36 percent; and South Korea at 193,000 tons, down 28 percent.
