Steel Imports Down in January

The U.S. imported 2.5 million net tons of steel in January, down 2.4 percent compared with the same month last year, the American Iron and Steel reported. Finished steel shipments of 1.9 million tons were off 4.4 percent from January 2023.

Finished steel import market share was an estimated 22 percent.

Key steel products with a significant import increase in January compared with December were sheets and strip all other metallic coatings, up 190 percent; hot-rolled bars, up 66 percent; and cut-length plates, up 44 percent.

In January, the largest suppliers were Canada at 627,000 net tons, up 16 percent compared with December; Brazil at 468,000 tons, up 40 percent; and Mexico at 396,000 tons, up 36 percent.
