Steel Shipments Down 15.8% in 2020

U.S. producers shipped 81 million tons of steel in 2020, a 15.8 percent decrease from the prior year, the Washington-based American Iron and Steel Institute reported. In 2019, total steel shipments from U.S. mills was 96.2 million tons.
In December, U.S. mills shipped 7 million tons of steel, a 4.4 percent increase from the previous month, but still down 12.1 percent from December 2019.
A comparison of December shipments to the prior month shows hot-rolled sheet up 3 percent; galvanized sheet up 2 percent and cold-rolled sheet down 3 percent.
