Global Steel Production Down in January

World crude steel production for the 63 countries reporting to the World Steel Association totaled 145.3 million metric tons in January, a 3.3 percent decrease compared with the same month in 2022.
 
The U.S. produced 6.5 million tons in January, down 6.8 percent from the same month in 2022. Overall production in North America totaled 9.1 million tons, down 5.6 percent from the prior year.

China remained the global production leader with 79.5 million tons produced in January, up 2.3 percent from January 2022. Indian production declined 0.2 percent to 10.9 million tons.

Iran, which has been ramping up production in recent months, was the only other Top 10 producer to up output in January, increasing it 27.7 percent to 2.7 million tons.

The Middle East was the only region to up production in January, increasing 19.7 percent to 3.8 million tons.
